According to researchers from the University of Adelaide, Australia, babies born following in vitro fertilizationare more likely to suffer from health problems at birth than others. To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied the records of more than 300,000 births that took place in Australia between 1986 and 2002. They excluded multiple births, which are more common after infertility treatment and which generate more risk. The researchers then realized that women who had undergone treatment to boost their fertility were about twice as likely to give birth to a stillborn child, to have a premature or low birth weight baby. In women who have undergone in vitro fertilization, the risk of complications is even five times higher!

For Professor Michael Davies, who led this study, this increased risk comes from the fact that the embryo begins its life in vitro and not in the uterus. According to him, the powerful drugs used to boost ovulation create a kind of “hormonal hangover” which can then affect the uterus and the placenta. “It is important that we are aware of these risks in order to make informed decisions to boost fertility.”

IVF: THE TREATMENTS ARE NOT INSIGNIFICANT

A few months ago, another study , Danish this time, indicated that children whose mothers had undergone treatment for infertility had an 18% higher risk of suffering from leukemia when young (i.e. i.e. between 0 and 19 years old) and 22% more risk of suffering from cancer of the endocrine glands in adulthood (after 20 years old)
